Major League Pickleball is the exciting, new elite pickleball league that aims to use its global platform to create the highest level of competition for professional female and male pickleball players worldwide, and to spread the joy and love of pickleball, attracting new entrants into the sport. For more information on Major League Pickleball, go to MajorLeaguePickleball.net and follow Major League Pickleball on FacebookTwitterInstagramTikTokPinterest and YouTube. (From Business Wire)

The new league, announced September 21, will debut with eight teams on November 5 at Dreamland, a Dripping Springs outdoor entertainment venue. The players will compete in singles, doubles, and mixed competitions to split a $150,000 prize purse.

Each team will consist of four players — two male and two female — and a player draft was held on October 1. (From Biz Journals)

Boise's own Susuannah Barr was drafted onto Team Rally along with Jessie IrvineJW Johnson, and Dylan Frazier

September 22 was the last day of Summer Outdoor Organized play. It culminated in the Orthopedic Open - the second time BAPA has held this event. In order to play, participants had at least one surgically replaced joint. Thanks to Kevin & Karen Johnson, who not only organized the Othorpedic Open and played in it; they also made the medals - which looked like walking canes.

Taking home the Gold medal are Mike Weber & Steve Robbins
Karen Johnson & Mark Prokop earned the Silver medal.
And, with a come-from-behind win, Kathlyn Drapac & Pat Tracy received the Bronze.

A huge THANK-YOU goes out to all of our Summer Organizers: Doreen Burnham, Lisa Griffin, Brian Tracy, Debbie Redmond, Mike Turner & Ryan Zimmerman.

At this point, with COVID cases peaking and hospitals in 'crisis standard of care,' there's no word yet on what the indoor season will look like and what BAPA will be organizing.  Stay tuned.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to:

    • Fred Slonaker, who served four years on the BAPA Executive Board as Treasurer.
    • Scott Michaelson, who served as BAPA President 2019-2020 and got us through the COVID shutdown.  He leaves after serving three years on the Board.

The Annual Meeting of the Boise Area Pickleball Association was held September 7, 2021.  Chris Mounier was elected President-elect.  Kathy Getto was elected Treasurer.  They join existing Board members: Brian Tracy, President; Katie Lamm, Secretary; and David Grube, immediate-past-President.

    From ThePickler.com

Mental health has been in the headlines in the sports world lately, including the world of tennis with Naomi Osaka’s absence from two of the majors (if you haven’t heard, you can hear from Osaka herself in her article published in Time).

Mental health and the mental side of pickleball has also been a recent topic of conversation, as Lea Jansen has been the first pro pickleball player to really be outspoken about it in connection with her series of consecutive women’s singles wins at the APP Cincinnati Open (in fact, she won the triple crown), PPA Orange County Cup, and USA Pickleball Newport Beach Championships.

Boise Parks and Recreation has approved a new rotation system at Hobble Creek Park. It is effective immediately and signs are posted on the courts.

The rotation will be used when all courts in the complex are full and players are waiting to play.

It consists of three paddle lines -- one for each set of four courts.

Waiting players choose which set of courts they want to play on and use the paddle holders for those courts to get in line to play.

Players can play either singles or doubles pickleball.

The first Pacific Northwest Regional held last month at Settlers’ Park and the new Hobble Creek Pickleball Complex, was the last of the USAPA’s Regional Tournaments which were qualifying tournaments for the 2021 USAPA Nationals to be held at the end of the year. Several of our top players won Gold Medals at our outstanding regional where 934 players from 32 states & provinces played in tough matches. They competed especially hard here because winning a Gold Medal also won them a coveted “Golden Ticket” to register early and lock down a spot to play in the important 2021 USAPA Nationals.

Tom Bowman Joey Brandes Lisa Brummond
Doreen Burnham Daphne Chen Sheri Cole
Julie Cramer Jessica Fung Tim Gleason
Lisa Griffin Dave Grube Randy Howell
Dick Johnson Brent Kerbs Jan Lake
Katie Lamm Bee Le Chin Le
Patti Lousen Diane Magnuson Kenneth Ortega
Becca Roberts Shelly Schwers Kartika Singpraseuth
Daryl Spivey Rob Townsend Jean Verdini
Gail Walker Mark Walters Kirk White

Nationals will again be held at the famous and world class Indian Wells Tennis Gardens in California and is anticipated to be the largest pickleball tournament in the world. For tournament players, winning a “Golden Ticket” is especially critical for this year’s Nationals because the turnout is expected to be so HUGE that some players likely will not get in. In fact, our winners are already utilizing their “Golden Tickets” to register, whereas players who did not win the coveted ticket have to wait till August 1 to try to, hopefully, finally get a spot in a lottery-style registration which will be enormous.

*There may be some other Golden Ticket winners from our area we were not aware of for this article. Please let us know about them so they can be recognized.
