On Saturday, on the second day of The Heroes Memorial Tournament, I accomplished my crazy project to face the Pros, at the Open Mix Doubles event, with my young partner Bree Zheng. We decided on a goal to make at least 2 points in the first game. That didn’t happen. Well, we had 7 games and we could only make 1 point, out of 77. In fact, we got beat badly as we had expected, but the human lessons and of course, pickleball lessons were amazing.

You see, these mix teams are the top of the top. They are Pros. Even though they knew that we were not even a half inch of their level, the majority played a game of slaughter. Shots that were more than a missile against my partner and myself, that was totally not necessary, because of the difference in our rankings and skills. In the game that we made our only point, after we commemorated that amazing accomplishment, the male opponent gave us a hard drive so strong that a great player in the opposite court, screamed to him that he should "take it easy" as we are not at their level. Thanks Glenn!

Nevertheless, two teams were just amazing with us. Making sure they won each point, but with grace, skills, technique and respect. They knew that they are good enough to win with grace.

Thank you to Harden/Spivey and Love/Love. You guys made our day. You are a great example of the sport. Please keep the good work!

Indeed, sports brings the inner nature of each person. Of course, it is a competition and the goal is to win and that can be done with respect and fairness with the opponents.

It should not be the same kind of mentality of using a bazooka against an opponent with a little revolver. In this situation we just had a sling.

So...I learned a lot… also did my dear courageous and mentally undefeated partner Bree, as she is only two months into the sport, and now she knows the path of improvement she has to follow on her pickleball path. Thanks Bree …you are an amazing human being...and are ready for anything in life...As for me, I don’t have that competitive instinct that override my humanity. I love the game, but fairness and control at the level of weaponry, it is a must in my nature. I’m a 3.5 and, when and if my skills move from a sling to a revolver, I will move to a 4.0 or higher. However, with 68 years on my shoulders, I know that I will never be a Pro…my best respects to the ones that accomplished that level of play...  Cheers...

Boise Parks & Recreation has published the 4-on-4-off rotation scheme for Hobble Creek park.  There are two lines of paddle racks, one in each of the breezeways between pickleball courts.

In the breezeway closest to the YMCA, that paddle rack controls courts 9-12 (the four courts closest to the YMCA). In the other breezeway is a paddle rack that controls pickleball courts 3-8.

There are also separate paddle racks that control the 4-on-4-off rotation for the two championship courts (courts 1&2).  Read the full explanation of how the paddle rack system works by clicking the link below.

While the goal for everyone playing this game is to improve and be competitive, this often comes as a result of playing with players of equal abilities. Therefore, finding our ability or skill rating is important so we can compete and more importantly have fun...

While some players go to tournaments and learn through wins and losses that they are closer to this level than that level, there is a quicker way to find out what your skill level is.

How? By booking a session with a Certified Rating Specialist.

Today we are interviewing a rating specialist who lives in the Treasure Valley.

Can you tell us your name and a little about yourself?

My name is Chris Mounier, and I’m a Certified Rating Specialist through IPTPA.

    What is IPTPA?

International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association. They are the world leader in developing teaching standards in the sport of pickleball.

Why should I consider getting a certified rating?

By obtaining a certified rating through this program, players will achieve an internationally recognized rating for recreational skill level play at clubs and the confidence of knowing which skill level to enter at their first tournament.

Players who have gone through an IPTPA rating session have a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses while having a better understanding of the path needed for individual improvement.

Is the rating system you use accurate and effective? How does it work?

The IPTPA rating system is the only 100% objective skill-based rating system in the world.

Players will be tested on dinks, ground strokes, 3rd shop drops, volleys, overhead, offensive lobs, serves and return of serves.

They will also participate in “ghost doubles”, where they will play other players at the level they are testing to achieve.

I’m interested in learning more. How do I contact you?

I am a member of BAPA, live in the Boise area and am also a  Certified Pickleball Trainer by both Pickleball Coaching International and the International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association. I look forward to meeting and working with you.

You can reach me by email at pickledazed@gmail.com or by phone at 818-825-6678.

WHAT IS PICKLE-JAM, A PICKLEBALL JAMBOREE:

While you’re at the venue, you will have the opportunity to play game after game after game…

A.J. Evans and I were the Tournament Directors for the Idaho Senior Games in 2019.   We had an agreement with Mike Thornton, the Idaho Senior Games Coordinator, regarding the referees.   Any referee who refereed 10 or more games, or 9 games with at least 3 hours of volunteer work at the games, would be eligible for a 50% discount on the next year's registration.  As you know, we did not have the Idaho Senior Games in 2020.  I have contacted Mike Thornton and this agreement will be honored for the 2021 Idaho Senior Games.  Registration will open May 1st.  The following is a list of the referees who qualified for the discount.  Mike Thornton would like you to contact him when you register.  His number is 208-861-8000.
